Online Concert: Festival d'Aix-en-Provence-MEDINEA Intercultural Creation Session-Concert

As a result of the restrictions in place to protect against the spread of Covid-19, the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra adapted and developed new online training programs in order to continue to carry out its mission of training and accompanying young musicians in their professional development. Country borders currently pose a challenge to an artist’s mobility and so it becomes important to create new workspaces and meeting places which allow for the preservation of the vital links and intercultural dialogue at the heart of these programs. The training programs were created through a process of reflection and ongoing exchange with the artists and pedagogical experts who were initially involved in training sessions that were scheduled to take place in Aix during the 2020 edition of the Festival d’Aix. Through these newly adapted programs, the MYO continue to defend its values which include artistic excellence, innovation, the expression of cultural diversity, and activities which promote social inclusion.

This year’s July session took place in a completely revisited format. As always, the session gathered eleven young artists specialised in improvisation led in their intercultural composition by Fabrizio Cassol. Five of these artists took part in the training session from the Camargo Foundation in Cassis. They were joined by six musicians online from Bulgaria, Italy, Greece, Lebanon and Turkey. Together they took on the challenge of composing collectively in an intercultural ensemble while taking into consideration the online element of the session that was at the heart of the creative process.

Mübadele – Ανταλλαγή (The Exchange): collecting stories and memories of migration

EVENTS OF THE PROJECT:

  • 18th of October 2018 - 1:00pm - Panel: “Open Music Lab - A Singer’s Approach to Modern Music” by Alexandros Charkiolakis, Recep Gül, Canan Özgür, Lito Messini at ITU MIAM Cevad Memduh Altar Hall.

  • 18th of October 2018 - 4:30pm - Panel: “Artist’s Approach to Participatory Music” by Ahmet Ozan Baysal, Alexandros Charkiolakis, Recep Gül at ITU MIAM Cevad Memduh Altar Hall.

  • 20th of October 2018 - 7:00pm - Concert: “Mübadele - The Exchange” at ITU Maçka Kampüsü Mustafa Kemal Amfisi.

Designed and directed by Ozan Baysal as part of 2018 Medinea Outreach Programme, the project Mübadele is based on collected personal stories and collective memories of migrated Greek – Turkish communities and their next generations who live in Istanbul.

The 1923 Lausanne Treaty, which ended the 1919-1922 Greco-Turkish War, decreed the compulsory exchange of religious minority populations in Greece and Turkey. As a result, almost a million and a half-Orthodox Christians residing in Turkey and half a million Muslims residing in Greece were uprooted from the lands on which they lived for generations and were forcefully sent to another country. The agreement not only caused a radical homogenization of the distribution of populations of the Near East but also, marked a milestone in the nationalization and modernization processes of the two countries, thus reshaping the nationalist discourses, as well as the cultural and national identities of Greeks and Turks.
Stories from The Exchange of 1923 were narrated by participants as sections of a composition – titled “Mübadele” which was composed by Turkish composer Recep Gül. The composition consists of sections that are open for improvisatory narrations as well as pre-composed areas. This project has also been led by Recep Gül whose composition is performed and, Alexandros Charkiolakis, who gave an effective effort on organizational works. A concert has been performed on October 20th, 2018 in one of Medinea members concert hall, the Center for Advanced Studies in Music.

This 2018 Medinea Outreach Project intended not only to remember the Greco-Turkish Forced Religious Exchange, a human tragedy from the past by narrated stories. But also to reconsider and address some questions of contemporary importance, such as forced migration, homogenization, othering, displacement, the contingency of identity and cultural mobility.
